Back Porch Fundraiser...May 26th

My gosh...have I learned a lot this month! I've learned that children are best photographed in the first 10 minutes they get in front of the camera. I've learned that something doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful. I've learned that frowns can be cute too. I've learned that white should not be worn when you plan to photograph children in their natural habitat. I've learned that I love what I can do with a camera when crawling around on my belly (hence the last "I've learned"). I've learned that love is more powerful than style, that interaction is more important than clothing. I've learned that children are simply smaller versions of us big people and if you get on their level...you just might start to see the world the way they do.

I was fortunate enough to grow up with a dad who enjoyed photography as a hobby. My sisters and I were constantly bombarded with a camera...but in a way that made sense, that didn't make us hate being in front of it. He captured us best by just being there with camera in hand as we lived our lives. The older I get the more precious these photos become to me, especially since I've realized that not everyone has this luxury of having a talented photographer in the family. In all honesty, it's those photos from my childhood that inspire my family lifestyle shoots. It only seems natural to photograph kids being kids, and families being families. It's definitely not perfect, but there's something so imperfectly beautiful about it. I hope you see in the photos below what I felt when I was taking them. If I manage to forward even a small part of that feeling I will be happy with that accomplishment. Because what is a photo if it does not capture the essence of the subject?...and his mommy...and daddy.

Back Porch Fundraiser...May 13th

Wow...May has been crazy! I'm lovin' it (McDonalds does not own that statement...). I just realized that I will be shooting a few more Photos for Life sessions tonight, so I figured that I should blog the ones I shot a couple weeks ago.

These three couples were a lot of fun and we all enjoyed the wonderful weather we were having that day and ran around Hawrelak Park for a little while. We also endured some pretty intense winds...as you will see from photo #5, but all in all it was a great evening of photo fun!

Meet Will and Cathy. We will be photographing their wedding in July (at the Paramount Theatre) so we figured it was about time to get out and do engagement photos. We met them in the 104 st area so we could enjoy the beautiful weather while running around for some stylish city shots.

Back Porch Fundraiser...May 8th

Hello everyone! I hope you are all enjoying this lovely spring morning, I know I am...I actually think I'm getting a tan from all the sun coming in my office window this morning...

For those of you who don't know about this little event yet, let me explain a little bit about Photos for Life. You see, I volunteer for an organization called the Back Porch. Visit their website for more info, but the idea is that they give love and support to women who are facing unplanned pregnancies. Because they operate completely off of donations, I thought it would be cool to put together a little photo fundraiser for them....so ta da! Photos for Life was born! Ha! That was kind of punny...get it? Life? Born?...ok, nevermind, maybe it wasn't that funny after all. :)

Photos for Life will be running throughout the month of May and the small selection of images you see below are from our first set of sessions, which took place on Saturday. Walter & Dominique, E-Session

Time for more blogging! We seem to be doing a lot of photography in May, so get prepared for lots of posts. This past weekend we spent some time with Walter and Dominique for their engagement photos. We spent a little bit of time in the paths surrounding the provincial museum and then took a little stroll over to high street for some 'city' shots. As you can see we are just starting to see the leaves budding on the trees and I couldn't be happier about that! I mean really...that means summer is on its way! I hope you all enjoy the photos...and the lovely spring weather!

Bryce & Micheline, A Rocky Mountain Wedding

Alright, it's true, I'll admit it...we get to do some pretty cool stuff with our wedding couples! This past weekend was no different as we joined our friends Bryce and Micheline for their rocky mountain wedding.

I think it was in December when Micheline gave me a call and told me that Bryce had proposed and they were hoping to have a short engagement and she needed to know when we were available...because they had to have us there. I blushed. We were flattered. And so on May 1st in Banff, Alberta they had a fantastic wedding filled with love and surrounded by family...and boy, was it fun!

We started the day off with the girls getting ready in Canmore and then sped (quite literally) to the ceremony taking place in Banff. The time after the ceremony was filled with a creative photo shoot, but Bryce and Micheline had decided to throw something a bit special in at the end...a helicopter ride! The pilot took us for a bit of ride across the border into BC and landed among the mountains so we could spend some time taking photos. Isn't that awesome!?! It was a tiny bit chilly and we battled through snow that was knee deep (and waist deep at some points). This portion of the shoot somehow ended up with Bryce waist deep in snow, consequently dropping Micheline into a snow bank and me laughing so hard that I fell over and also got stuck...it was glorious fun! Tim didn't know what in the world had happened. All in all, our subjects were real troopers and we were so happy to have this unique opportunity.

Thank you to the couple and the Barter and Stiller families for treating us like members of the family! It was a blessing to be a part of this wonderful day.

Mark & Sarah's E-Session

My gosh, I feel like I'm blogging a lot lately...probably because I am. I'm not complaining though, being busy is awesome!

On Saturday afternoon Tim and I spent a little bit of time with Mark and Sarah, creating their engagement photos at the Provincial Museum. It was a good time! I'd have to admit that the weather wasn't ideal at 5 degrees...but we're all brave Edmontonians. Mark and Sarah are a wonderful couple, in love, and we are looking forward to their wedding taking place in September!

(Not so sunny) California!

One of the biggest struggles as photographers is to go on vacation and not bring a camera along for the ride...so I figured, why struggle? So, this blog post is about two photographers with one camera on a lovely little trip through California.

First of all, I must explain that I had no reasoning for renting this little yellow VW bug...aside from the fact that it was "cute". What can I say? I'm a girl. Also, for those of you who didn't know...I'm a bit crazy about candy stores. Not so much about the candy, but about the experience of being in a candy store. Hence the pictures of salt water taffy and the Jelly Belly Factory...mmmmm...colorful deliciousness!

The one thing we did kind of forget to do is include ourselves in the photos...oops. But I hope you will enjoy coming along for the ride anyway :)

Francis & Jenny

Wow. I'm really not sure where to start on this one. Well, then I guess I should start by saying that Tim and I are very honored that Francis & Jenny chose us to photograph their wedding. It's not every day a photographer gets to shoot in sunny California (well, unless they live there of course...) and we couldn't have been happier about how it all turned out.

The ceremony took place in a little town just north of LA called Santa Paula. The traveling families had taken over one of the local inns, so we spent the morning there getting some shots of the preparations. We then took the 2 block sprint to the church where the ceremony took place. Afterwards we took a bit of a drive and stopped in a few places for creative photos along the winding California highways and ended up in the town of Ojai, where the reception was taking place. The reception was something entirely new for us...being that it was outside!!! That's right Edmonton, outside in April! There were many fabulous opportunities for photos as the sun began to set and the twinkling overhead lights came on.

This was one of those days where I constantly found myself holding my breath. If not for the beauty around me, than for the abundance of love and happiness. It was a beautiful wedding, in a fantastic place, with wonderful people. We are so thankful to Francis & Jenny for including us in this wonderful celebration! We only hope that you love these photos as much as we do!

Isn't spring wonderful?

It's days like these that remind me why spring is so awesome...and how much fun Tim and I had in our teenage days. Sit down with us for more than 10 minutes and you will find that we are an Edmonton couple through and through. Mostly because we've experience this city together 10 times over in the last 12 years...and it never gets old when you're carrying a camera.

Today we did what you would call a photo walk through an area of downtown that is close to our hearts...and you're going to think that's weird being that most people would consider it the beginning of a ghetto area, but we like to see the potential in the area the city likes to call Downtown East. We would honestly love to shoot in this area with clients, but you gotta be tough to enjoy this environment...That's right! We're totally badass ;) (Can I say that?)

As you can probably tell...we were being a little bit goofy...but what's life (and marriage) if you can't have a little silly fun? I actually had no intention of blogging any of this...but I couldn't resist when it turned out to be so much fun! So...follow us on our walk...and enjoy!

Kara & Ryan - Baby Bump

Good morning everyone! It's a bright and sunny 8 degrees here in Edmonton this morning and there's a chance we may see a thunderstorm this afternoon! You have no idea how much that excites me! Thunderstorms are one of those things that make me sit back and wonder at the magnificence of creation...one of the other things is featured in the pictures below!

Meet Ryan & Kara! They were a part of the wedding party for Ryan & Amanda Gaudet last summer and Kara also volunteers at the same organization as I do. We both contribute time to a wonderful organization called the Back Porch. If you have a chance take a look at the site, as well as the fundraiser I am planning for them.

I spent a little bit of time on Saturday with Ryan & Kara to capture some maternity photos. They are actually expecting their third child, but had never had never had the opportunity for maternity photos before, so I was very honored that they chose to have me create these images for them! There was lots of love happening here! And, although you see snow in these photos, we were blessed with a nice spring day!

Just for Fun!

It's mornings like this one that make me feel so blessed to be doing what I love. Let me tell you what I mean...I've been shooting so much lately that I've got a mile high pile of editing waiting for me. I'm also working on a couple of new projects for new "divisions" of the business (They're going to be great!) and I'm spending the rest of my time just trying to keep my scatter brained head together. I know, most people wouldn't consider all these things to be good, but I see them as part of my journey. It may be a lot of work at times, but then I just have to sit here and realize that busy is good because busy means that I've done something right! So, that's exactly what I'm doing here on this Tuesday morning as I put together this blog post and prioritize the rest of my day. I am taking a moment to appreciate all that I have...and trying not to overwhelmed with all that I have to do! :)

Because of all this I almost decided to opt out of a shoot yesterday with my lovely friends and photographers Rachel J, Stephanie Emmerzael, and Blake Loates. Boy, am I glad I didn't. It was a wonderful shoot! We got together yesterday morning with our models Kyra, Amelia and Liz (sorry...didn't get to shoot with Liz) and ran around an industrial area trying some new things. It's always great shooting just for fun with other photographers, it gives you an opportunity to relax and feed off of the group energy and most of all...have fun! Which is what we did. I hope you enjoy this small selection of images!

Mike & Elizabeth - E-Session

There's nothing I love more than capturing genuine interaction between two people in love...I know, it's so horribly sappy, but it's the truth. We had a great shoot yesterday with two very genuine people, Mike and Elizabeth. I don't think you could have made Mike stop laughing if you tried...and it was awesome! We honestly got a little snap happy...

We also continue to be impressed with the new locations we keep finding in the Whyte ave area. There seems to be no shortage of variety and we love the slightly grungy city vibe! So the four of us took a little stroll around the area and had a great time creating some great images.

Thanks to Mike and Elizabeth for being so full of love and laughter. You really made these happen, and we are so looking forward to being at your wedding in September!

New Life - Raphael

Say hello to little baby Raphael! He was born last Tuesday and Tim and I were fortunate enough to visit while the family was still in the hospital to take a few snapshots. I would have to admit that I am a little scared of newborns, they always seem so fragile, but my fascination with the beauty of new life took over and I was absolutely enthralled. It was so amazing to see the new family get acquainted!

If you are new to our blog you will have missed the first three chapters in this family's life, but don't worry, you are welcome to go back and look. It's been an incredible experience to walk beside our friends Guy & Michela through their engagement, wedding, pregnancy and now the addition of their first child...and have photo evidence to prove it! Get Your MOO On!

We have this funny little saying in our culture that goes something like...bigger is better! Well, when it comes to business cards, apparently that's not true. Never have I received so many comments on our business cards than with our super awesome MiniMOO cards!

If you haven't seen our cards they have an assortment of photos on one side with info on the other. MOO makes it super easy to do this. People go nuts over these things, so I've become prepared and now carry a whole box with me wherever I go. I usually hand people a couple to choose from...but most of them greedily eye the stack in my hand and request to see the rest. This results in them flipping through card after card of our photos! Who wouldn't want that!?! And yes, the size does make a difference...it's unique (well, until everyone else starts doing it) and they are often described as "cute". All of you in the wedding industry know that you've accomplished a mission when a bride labels something "cute". You may as well just retire, because you've hit the big one!

Anyway, I am writing this post because I have had so many photographers ask me where I get these from. So I'm sharing this with you! Go to Moo.com and check it out. Rock the Dress with Mrs. G

Another new concept! I'm sure by now that most of you have heard of a trend called "Trash the Dress" and it's slightly less destructive sister, "Rock the Dress". The objective of a shoot like this is to let loose and have fun in your wedding dress while capturing some great images.

The images below are from a shoot I did with Amanda yesterday afternoon. Our sets included a motorcycle (requested by Amanda's husband!), a LRT station, and a little bit of downtown grunge. Amanda was a trooper and braved less than ideal temperatures (-10) to rock her dress! It was an awesome shoot!

Now for my final thought for this blog post...I am going to be involved in a fundraiser coming up on May 15th called Rock the Dress for Breast Cancer! A bunch of photographers in Edmonton are getting together to raise funds for the Relay for Life. The shoots will be $100 for 45 minutes with all proceeds going to the cause. Francis & Jenny - E-Session

I'm back!...and actually quite surprised and pleased with myself for getting so much editing done today! Here is the second shoot we did yesterday afternoon with Francis and Jenny. Engagement shoots are such a fun part of what we do, they are fun and relaxed, and it was awesome to shoot two in one day!

As I mentioned in the last post it was quite sunny and just a little bit slushy, so we were impressed at Francis' choice of...white linen pants. They stayed clean too! A great time was had by all as we ran around the university area making good use of road signs, graffiti and busy sidewalks.

Adam & Veronica - E-Session

We had a busy, slushy, sunny day yesterday...it was pretty great! This is the first of two engagement sessions we did yesterday afternoon and we were blessed with above freezing weather and lots of sunshine! Adam & Veronica were in town from Slave Lake for the weekend and we'll be heading there for their wedding in June!

We started our session on the high level bridge and then made our way downtown for a couple of stops. One in a little back alley we've come to use quite often and Enterprise Square...where we actually did a little bit of wading through Chinese New Year celebrations happening there that day.

Zalman & Esfira - Celebrating 40 Years!

Wow, what a day! I'd have to admit that when Zalman and Esfira's daughter, Lalita, asked me if I would be able to shoot her parents' 40th wedding anniversary celebration I had no idea what to expect. Let's just say that it was definitely a celebration!

The couple decided to commemorate this special milestone by participating in a full Jewish wedding ceremony, which was a new and exciting experience for me. Thank you to all the people involved in this event that made it so exciting to be a part of, and to my second shooter for the day, Gord. The event was a joyous feast for the eyes (and the two cameras on me at all times...) that was filled with tradition, family, and laughter.

"Behind the Scenes"

So, if you've visited this blog a few times you have most likely seen some work from the November fashion and beauty shoot we did. I discovered that day what kind of work goes into a shoot like this...before the photographer even sees the model! I thought it would be fun to have a few shots of the many things going on...so my friend and second assistant for the day, Lilla Pferschy, was gracious enough to do some "behind the scenes" shots for us. It's mostly hair and makeup prep and a few shots of us shooting the first set...but I think it's kind of cool to see what goes into a shoot...so I thought I would share them with you! Enjoy!

Steve & Crystal - A Wedding In Steinbach

Tim and I took a lovely little trip to my parents' hometown of Steinbach, Manitoba this past weekend to photograph our cousin's wedding. I've got people just begging to see these images, so, after a few days of hard work and deliberation we are ready to unveil the first few (I use the word loosely) images.

The weather wasn't what I had hoped for...but when you're hoping for +20 in Manitoba in January let's just say that your desire may be just a little out of reach. Therefore we settled for the -36 day that the strong prairie winds had created and kept nice and cozy warm...indoors.

We started out at the girls place and then made the drive into Winnipeg for our creative photos (trying our hardest not to get blown off the highway on the way). Since we couldn't go outside we spent the afternoon shooting at the Winnipeg Conservatory and the Canadian Mennonite University. Then back to Steinbach it was for a beautiful and emotion filled ceremony and reception.

Thank you so much to Steve and Crystal for putting this important day in our hands! It was an honor and pleasure to work with you, your families and your incredible wedding party. Now sit down and get ready for the longest blog post you've ever seen!...Ok, that may be a slight exaggeration.

Complimentary Engagement in January!

As some of you know already we generally do a special every fall for the following year of weddings where we offer a complimentary engagement session to our couples. For some reason it always goes longer than we planned...it's probably because we really enjoy our E-sessions and wouldn't want anyone to miss out on them. Labonte Baby Bump

Do these two look a little familiar to you yet? There's an easy explanation for that...this is our third shoot with them in the past year! Wow, it's incredible how fast life moves, and watching close friends on their journey is proof of that, especially when you are lucky enough to take photos of them during these important milestones. Just to bring you up to date we shot Guy & Michela's engagement photos last February, their wedding in May and now...Baby Labonte is on his way! (Michela insists it's a boy.)

This was my first maternity type shoot...so I would have to admit that it was a bit of an experiment. I didn't want to change my style to fit into the "typical" maternity type shots...and then I figured out that I really didn't have to. After all, photography is about life, is it not? And what's more exciting in life than well...new life. So I shot this like I would any couple in love. Mostly clothed...and natural...with a little bit of focus on the beautiful bump.

Thanks guys for letting us capture these important moments in your life and for being the greatest friends!

Colin & Julia's E-Session

Man was it cold yesterday! As an Edmontonian I have always kind of considered -15 to be relatively warm...until we decided to shoot engagement photos in it. Despite the less than ideal conditions we had a great time wandering Whyte Ave with Colin & Julia yesterday afternoon. We made it a little easier on ourselves by popping in and out of places such as The Billiard Club, Fuss Cupcakes and Chapters...all in all it was a great afternoon...and aren't they just adorable?!?

Really looking forward to your wedding next July! We will welcome the 40 degree temperature difference with open arms!

Hello all! First of all I just want to say a belated Merry Christmas and a big thanks to everyone for a great 2009! 2010 is gearing up faster than we've ever seen before and we're incredibly excited about the year ahead of us. There seems to be so much happening and we are offering more to our lovely couples than ever before. Including, among many other goodies, websites and jazzed up albums.

It's not everyday that your opinions will feed someone...

As we very quickly approach the end of 2009 and the Christmas season is in full swing it's hard not to fully realize and appreciate how fortunate we are. Never mind us...it's you who should be thankful! You do, after all, have Tim and I as your friends, photographers and family...what's not to be thankful for?!?! All kidding aside, we really are very fortunate, and there's no time like the present to give back.

This brings me to the actual purpose of my blog post (as most of you know, I'm kind of random and long winded)...We are participating in an awesome cause called Cans for Comments! Check out the website if you want to know exactly what's going on here or if you want to know how it all started. I believe the idea was started by a photographer in Vancouver and it has since spread across North America. Basically how it works is just like this...

Fashion Shoot!

Let me introduce you to some of Lightside's first fashion photos! This is something I have been wanting to do...well, forever. The organization of this shoot was my responsibility, so I discovered over the past two weeks how much work it is to get 10 people in one room for a day, but it was worth it! I'd have to admit that it was pretty fun and I couldn't be happier with the results! We shot several concepts and outfits over the course of a few hours, so this is a very small selection of my favourites. If you would like to see more there is an album posted on our Facebook page.

I would like to thank everyone involved in this shoot for all their time and talent! Clothing by Amber Leask (Mystery Girl) and Kelsey McIntyre (Serendipity), hair by Kathryn McDonnell, makeup by Tonia LaRiviere. Thank you to the assistants for the shoot, Tim and Lilla and last but not least to the models, Natasha, Jill and Justin.

Tye & Kris E-Session

Hello! For those of you who are not part of our facebook following I thought I would post it here too. Last week we were accepted into the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers! Now most of you are probably wondering what in the world that is. Kory & Lilla - City E-Session

We hit a few popular places in Edmonton last night while doing this shoot with Kory and Lilla. Sunset on the High Level Bridge was pretty sweet! Then it was across the bridge for a quick stop at the High Level Diner, where everyone dining at the High Level Diner thought we were a little nuts. And then on to Whyte Ave! Just in time for Christmas!

So...with the arrival of the snow here in Edmonton this week we got around to thinking a bit about the quickly arriving holiday season. It was a tradition in my family when I was a kid to go out and get photos taken in the fall so we could send out a Christmas card to all our family and friends. So...we'd like to help you start this tradition in your own family! We are offering a couple days over the next couple of weeks where we will be booking family portraits. Ryan & Courtney...and Finnigan...and Sophie!

Let us just start by saying...yikes, it was cold yesterday! I don't think the two canines noticed one bit, but us humans were freezing our butts off. Well, cold or not, we had photos to capture with Ryan and Courtney and managed to have a great time doing it. By the way....these were all shot in Alcomdale...town of 50. Well, ok, maybe a few more than 50, but there's nothing quite like finding odd little spots in our tiny prairie towns. Hope you like 'em!

Lisa + Fruit

So, I'm not sure when it was that I had this idea, but it involved a photo using two pieces of kiwi for eyes...yes I know, I'm insane, but what fun will you have if you don't try something different every once in a while? Lisa was my enthusiastic model and we had some fun with this shoot. I knew I needed someone a little goofy to pull this one off, so she fit the bill perfectly. I kind of continued with the fruit theme for the rest of the shoot...just in case you hadn't noticed.

Wow! What a day! Zak & Jolene had a beautiful wedding at the Old Country Lodge in Edmonton yesterday...and I've been editing all day so you can see some photos! We shot at the St. Albert Botanic Gardens and a skate park just down the street. We were super excited about the skate park and were so glad when Zak & Jolene jumped right in and played along. Now THIS was FUN!!! We did a shoot on Sunday afternoon with Scott & Carrie and their little girl Virginia. My goodness, the expressions on this tiny little human were fabulous! So, I should probably be packing for my flight home tomorrow, but I couldn't resist these photos. They were calling my name, I swear. These lovely people named Raoul & Sonia were married in Victoria, BC today. I'm sorry there are no ceremony photos edited yet, I'll get to those soon. These guys were a lot of fun and the backdrop was breathtaking, especially to this prairie girl. We'll be doing a second ceremony next weekend, so stay tuned!
